Pet food to be recalled due to presence of salmonella - Lynn News

Feeder mice that are sold at Pets At Home are being recalled due to the presence of salmonella.

The mice, which have been imported from Lithuania, have been found to contain the bug, which can cause a severe illness in humans and sometimes even be fatal.

Frozen mice are used to feed a range of reptiles including lizards and snakes, and also when feeding large spiders such as tarantulas.

"When handling and serving pet feed it is always advised to clean utensils after use. Consumers should wash hands thoroughly after handling reptiles, pet feed, utensils or after contact with the faeces of animals. Raw pet feed should be stored separately from any food (especially ready to eat foods). Care should be taken when defrosting to avoid cross contamination of foods and surfaces.

"Carefully and thoroughly clean and disinfect any surfaces it has been in contact with, including your hands.

"Salmonella, either through direct handling of the products, or indirectly, for example from handling infected reptiles, their vivarium, utensils or contact with the faeces of these animals."

Salmonella would pose little risk for the reptiles themselves but could harm other pets.

According to GOV.uk: "It is already well established that there is a risk of salmonella associated with pet reptiles. Reptiles, including snakes, have long been known to carry particular types of salmonella, most carry salmonella in their gut and shed the bacteria in their droppings."
