Heartbreak Over Dog's 'Worried' Reaction To Owners Heading Off On Vacation
A black and white Newfoundland called Clyde looked crestfallen as his human companions busied themselves packing for a vacation, apparently intending to leave him behind.
In a video posted to TikTok by his owner, under the handle hennysnacks, the cuddly pet pooch can be seen lingering by the doorway holding a soft toy in his mouth. However, it quickly emerges that Clyde's concerns are unfounded.
Dogs miss their owners when they are gone, even if it's just for a couple of hours. A 2011 study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science proved this with an experiment in which 12 dogs with no history of separation anxiety were left home alone for 30 mins, two hours and four hours.
In each instance, researchers monitored the dog's response to their owner's return. They found that there was a "higher frequency of physical activity and attentive behavior" when they returned after two hours compared with 30 minutes.

Robbie Baker/GettyLittle wonder then that Clyde reacted with such utter heartbreak to the idea of being separated from his humans for several days, never mind several hours.
Fortunately, he need not have worried.
On the video, his owner can be heard saying: "Oh Clydey, don't worrying darling, you're coming with us. We're not going to go away and leave you." They notice that he is holding his bunny which "usually means he's stressed and worried" before going on to reassure Clyde, saying, "You're coming with us."
Moving in closer, Clyde's sad expression is clear to see. "Don't be worried," his owner tells him. "You'll be in the car in a second." According to the video, soon after, Clyde went off with his owners on vacation.
But while Clyde's story may have had a happy ending, his sad expression when he first feared he was being left behind tugged at the heartstrings of many animal lovers on social media.
One user shared a similar experience with their pet. "When we moved house, my dog got in the van with all the furniture and wouldn't move," the TikToker said. "Of course you were coming baby, we bought you a house."
Another user commented: "Please get him his own little doggy suitcase so you can pack it with him and he knows he's coming too." A third wrote: "My dog used to have to be the first one in the car, before anything else, or she'd sulk," while a fourth said: "I put our Betty's harness on when packing the car so she knows she's coming too. She may have it on for an extra hour, but she's so happy!"
Many were left feeling very emotional. "I'm crying," one user wrote, with another posting: "Why am I crying literal tears?" Thankfully, his owner confirmed: "Don't cry Clyde had a great holiday with mum and dad."
