The forensic reports of samples collected from a suspected rave party linked to a prominent YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT 2 winner Elvish Yadav have been confirmed as venom of snake species, officials of the Noida Police said on Friday. The samples were sent to a forensic laboratory in Jaipur, Rajasthan shortly after the November 3, 2023 incident and their results were received by the police here a few days ago, an officer privy to the probe said.

"The results of the forensic reports of the sample have confirmed that the substances found from the party spot were indeed venom of cobra and krait species of snakes as was suspected initially in the case," the officer told PTI.

ADVERTISEMENT Six people, including YouTuber Elvish Yadav, were booked under provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and IPC Section 120A (criminal conspiracy) for allegedly providing snake venom for the suspected rave party at a banquet hall in Noida`s Sector 51 on November 3 last year. While five of those named in the FIR were arrested, Yadav was questioned in the matter but not arrested. According to police, Yadav, who was not present at the party, is being investigated on charges of providing venom for the event. After his name cropped up in the case, the 26-year-old YouTuber took to social media to refute the charges against him, dubbing them "baseless, fake and not even 1 per cent true". In its probe, the veterinary department here found that venom glands were missing in all nine snakes, including five cobras, that were rescued on November 3 from the possession of the accused persons, Dr Nikhil Varshney, who headed the probe committee, had told PTI. "Also, teeth were missing in eight of the nine snakes that were rescued," according to Varshney. What Elvish said about the accusations:  In November, when news came of his involvement in the case, Elvish took to Instagram, where he shared his statement in Hindi: "I woke up to news that Elvish Yadav has been arrested. Elvish Yadav has been caught with drugs etc. These things that are being spread against me. All these accusations against me are baseless. These are all fake. There is not even a single percent of truth in it. I am willing to cooperate with the UP Police."  He said that if he has even a percentage of involvement, he is ready to take the blame. "I would request UP Police, Honourable Chief Minister and Yogi Adityanath ji that if I am even caught with 1 per cent of involvement then I am ready to take all responsibility on me and I request the media, if you don`t have all evidence against me please don`t spoil name. I have no links with all the accusations made. If it's proved then I am ready to take the blame," he said. (with inputs from PTI) image

Threatened Baby Gopher Snake Saved From Okanagan Cold

image A young gopher snake was brought into the care of Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society after it was found inside and on its own. Image Credit: SUBMITTED/ Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society February 17, 2024 - 6:00 AM It may look like a rattlesnake, but this harmless little snake is a far cry from its venomous cousin.  Gopher snakes are relatively harmless and at this time of year they should be huddled away hiding from the cold. But that wasn't the case for a young great basin gopher snake who ended up in the care of Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society earlier this month. "It shouldn't have been awake," Eva Hartmann, Founder of the Society, told iNFOnews.Ca. "It was found in somebody's house inside, so that might have been why it was awake. Because when the outside temperature around the snake is warm they just stay awake." Typically during winter snakes and other reptiles will brumate in a similar way to hibernating mammals. "(Gopher snakes) can survive colder temperatures. They just slow down their heartbeat and breathing, and that's similar to what hibernating mammals do," Hartmann said. "Because the digestive system is slowed down so much that they can sort of wait out the cold months of the year until it gets warmer again." Snakes are rarely on their own in the winter. They keep each other warm by curling up in a large groups, also known as a hibernacula. For this reason, the snake in Interior Wildlife's care cannot be released back into the wild on its own until temperatures go up again. This rescued baby Gopher Snake is just 9 inches long. However, the numbers have been dwindling, at least partly because they are commonly mistaken for rattlesnakes and killed by locals. "You would find gopher snakes in very similar habitat to rattlesnakes," Hartmann said. "That's actually one of their... Defence mechanisms because they're completely harmless but they look similar to a rattlesnake." Both snakes can typically be found in rocky outcrops and although gopher snakes may look like rattlesnakes from afar, the difference can be quite obvious up close. The most telltale sign is a lack of a rattle at the end of their tales. Gopher snakes instead use an intimidating hissing noise to ward off potential predators. They also have a slightly larger head and a slimmer body than rattlesnakes. "(It's) illegal to kill gopher snakes or rattlesnakes but some people are afraid of things they don't know," Hartmann said. The great basin gopher snake is on the list of threatened species in BC.  Dwindling habitat, human development and use of rodenticides to poison the mice that gopher snakes eat have all damaged their numbers. This is especially unfortunate as the species plays an important and useful role in the Okanagan's ecosystem. They can be helpful pest controllers for rural residents and farmers by keeping unwanted mice and insects at bay. They are also BC's largest snake, growing up to two metres in length. The baby snake in Interior Wildlife's care has a long way to go until he's that big, measuring in at less than 50 centimetres long.  "I think it's important to shine the spotlight on the snake identification and how to farm with snakes around, rather than just putting the spotlight on species that might be cute and cuddly," Hartmann said. "It's you know not a good enough excuse for people to kill animals just because they don't like them or they think that they will harm them out of non-knowledge."
